Grinding sound when I hit the breaks?

Everytime I hit the breaks in my 2000 Isuzu trooper there is a loud GRINDING sound. When i'm driving and not using the breaks it sounds like i'm dragging something, but i'm not. Does anyone know what this means, and is it big $$$$ to fix?
